Ways to Avoid Diabetes Complications

Having diabetes doesn’t mean you can’t live a normal life.  But it is important to follow some simple rules to ensure you are managing your diabetes properly.  These rules include the following:

Don’t Smoke
Smoking can increase diabetes complications. Studies have shown that smokers who have diabetes are three times more likely to die of cardiovascular diseases than nonsmokers.  Smokers are also more susceptible for heart attack, stroke and nerve damage just to name a few.

Dental Care is Important
Diabetes can lead to a higher risk of gum infections.  Follow the dental tips your dentist gives you by brushing at least twice a day, flowing once a day and scheduling a dental visit at least twice a year.

Be Responsible with Your Drinking
Low blood sugar can be contributed to alcohol.  Drink in moderation and always eat something when you do decide to consume alcohol.

Don’t Ignore Stress
The insulin your body produces may not work properly due to the stress you are experiencing.  Learn some relaxation techniques, get plenty of sleep and pay attention to your stress level.

Manage Your Diabetes
Learn all you can about diabetes from a trained diabetes educator.  You are ultimately responsible for managing your diabetes so it is important to learn all you can about the steps you can take for the appropriate management.

Diabetes Education
At the Northeast Georgia Diagnostic Clinic, our Certified Diabetes educators are educated and licensed health care professionals who possess distinct and specialized knowledge in diabetes self-management education.  The credential demonstrates that they have mastered in depth knowledge and skills in the biological, social sciences, communication, counseling, and education to provide self-management education for those with, or at risk for diabetes.

If you would like to learn more about our approach to diabetes education or if you have questions about type 1 and type 2 diabetes, please contact us.
