Snoring Solutions

Sleep Medicine

Snoring—that turbulent noise caused by the vibration of airflow through the tissues of the nose and throat—can be quite frustrating, especially if your sleep is disturbed because of it. Whether it’s a chronic issue or because of a recent illness, anyone and everyone has the capability to snore.

Types of Snoring

There are two types of snoring, the kind that is indicative of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and primary snoring (also known as simple snoring).

  • Primary Snoring: In general, primary snoring is completely harmless. While it may still be disruptive here and there, primary snoring doesn’t indicate that there are deep-rooted problems to blame. It is usually caused by some blockage in the nasal passage and creates a rhythmic pattern. Seasonal allergies, colds and sleeping positions are the major culprits of primary snoring.
  • OSA Snoring: The kind of snoring that is indicative of Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be really detrimental to your health. Snoring and Sleep Apnea occurs when the upper airway is fully or partially blocked, resulting in shallow breathing or no breathing at all. This will not only cause sleepiness and irregular heart rhythms, but it can also block your brain from receiving sufficient oxygen.

Snoring Solutions

It’s important to find out what type of snoring you suffer from before going any further in identifying a snoring solution. If OSA – snoring and sleep apnea – can be ruled out, then the prevention and treatment will be much easier.

In order to improve your snoring habits, behavioral and lifestyle changes may be necessary—like quitting smoking, losing weight, refraining from alcohol and changing up your sleeping position. In rare cases, oral devices that keep the airway open and surgery may be the best option.  These changes could possibly be the only snoring solution you need.
