Cardiology is the subspecialty of internal medicine concerned with the functioning of the heart, blood vessels and circulation of blood throughout the body. Cardiology generally includes the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology.
Cardiologists must become board certified in Internal Medicine by completing seven or more years of medical school and postgraduate training. Then, for an additional three to five years, they study conditions specific to the heart, blood vessels and blood circulation.
